This year has been about new family traditions. For Advent, we made our own ornaments for our Jesse Tree and lit up luminarias. As we gathered together each night, we sang O Come, O Come Emmanuel as planned. But another tradition naturally evolved as we lingered around the tree: family music time! With Wonderful G’s guitar, we sang, clapped, and watched our children dance to the beat.
As the New Year approaches, I see another opportunity to create family memories. Whether or not you believe you’re driving evil spirits away with various noisemakers, New Year’s Eve is a fun, happy event that should not drive children to tears in fear.
Instead of too-loud firecrackers, why not just toot some horns and bang some drums? We will welcome 2012 with our favorite instruments from our music box:
- Drums, drums, drums!
- Rhythm sticks
- Kazoos
- Egg shakers
- Tambourines
- Whistles
Here’s to a wonderful New Year for all of us!
Make magic!
