My parents love to tell me the story of how I learned to read on the crook of my father’s arm. He read to me Niknok from the Pilipino Funny Komiks in the early 80s and he kept on buying it weekly even when I was a tad too old for it. You can say that I’m a happy product of cuddly read-aloud sessions.
My love for the written word has never left me and I now enthusiastically share it with my own children. Our shelves overflow with books, our floors are covered with more, and our days are blissfully (addictively?) filled with reading great books.
So I am one with LitWorld.org’s efforts in promoting the importance of reading aloud to children every day through its World Read Aloud Day. Now on its fifth year, it is celebrated on the first Wednesday of March, which happens to be today for 2014.
A Special Reading of The Gruffalo
To celebrate, we prepared a video of me reading my little son’s current favorite, The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. I hope you enjoy it… this one’s my fifth attempt because I don’t think you would want to hear roosters crowing in the background! I used some of the tips on reading aloud that I gave two years ago on my post Bring Out The Diva In You.
What will you read to your kids today? Tell me in the comments!
I hope you can send us a video of you reading too! Email me at mariel (at) thelearningbasket (dot) com.
(NOTE: We have an ongoing giveaway of two KaHone themed-activity boxes. Do join!)
Make magic!
